Struggling with Long Nails: My Honest Confession

Struggling with Long Nails: My Honest Confession

Long, pointed nails—often called “stiletto” nails—are everywhere. Celebrities like Adele and Rihanna rock them, and you’ll even spot them on your local diner’s waitress. But personally? I just can’t get on board. Not for me, not for anyone.

There’s this idea that long nails exude femininity, success, and a bit of a daring edge. They’re supposed to make a statement, showing that we’re in control of our lives, careers, and even our romantic pursuits. They’re fun, flirty, and bold. But honestly, I just see them as impractical.

I’m someone who likes to get things done without unnecessary hassle. The constant filing and shaping feel like a waste of time when I could be doing something else—like trying on shoes, peeling back a yogurt lid, digging through my purse, or making the bed without worrying about snagging a sheet.

For me, it’s all about convenience. Nails that barely extend past my fingertips are perfect. They look neat, help with an occasional itch, and most importantly, don’t turn into accidental weapons. As a writer, long nails slow me down. They create a disconnect between my fingers and my thoughts, making typing more frustrating than it needs to be. My pinkie nail constantly hits the wrong key, and I find myself hitting “backspace” more than I’d like. When that happens, I reach for the clippers.

Some people refresh their minds with a smoothie or a walk outside—I do it by trimming my nails. But just because I prefer short nails doesn’t mean I miss out on fun nail trends. I love experimenting with colors, nail art, and sparkles. I’ve rocked festive designs for Halloween, the Fourth of July, and other holidays, even if my nails are far from the dramatic stiletto style.

In the end, long nails just aren’t for me. I struggle to see the appeal, though I try to find the silver lining in everything. I guess they could be useful as makeshift toothpicks or for slicing through an uncut bagel. And if you ever need to send shivers down someone’s spine, dragging them across a chalkboard would certainly do the trick.

Whatever your preference, there are plenty of great nail colors to try. So, what’s your take on long, pointed nails? How do you like to wear yours?
