“Cosmetic Shelf Life: Knowing When to Replace Your Makeup”

Makeup products don’t last forever, and their safety can be affected by how they’re stored. Even though expiration dates provide general guidelines, improper storage can cause products to go bad much sooner. On the flip side, if stored correctly, some items may remain usable beyond their expiration date.

Foundation typically lasts between three to six months. Concealers with wand applicators should be replaced within six months since they can easily harbor bacteria. However, stick, twist-up, or compact concealers can last up to a year, especially if applied with a brush.

Powders, including facial powder, blush, and eyeshadow, should be discarded after a year. If you develop an eye infection, any eyeshadow you’ve used should be thrown away to prevent reinfection.

Lip products have a lifespan of about a year. Mascara, however, should be replaced every three months—or sooner if it dries out or if you develop an eye infection. Never share mascara to avoid contamination.

Makeup pencils can last a year or more if sharpened regularly. Once they become dry, crumbly, or difficult to apply, it’s time to toss them.

Products without preservatives should be used or discarded within six months to ensure safety.
