I got inspired by Mara Hoffman’s Spring 2012 collection and became obsessed with creating a bold, tribal-style necklace—perfect for my upcoming trips to LA and Florida. What I love about these DIY tribal necklaces is their versatility; you can wear just one for a subtle touch or stack several for a more dramatic look.
Another great thing? You can get all the supplies for under $20 at Michael’s. I recently wore three of these necklaces with a shirt I made at a DIY retreat in Palm Springs, and they looked amazing together. You can customize yours with different color combinations or by adding nuts, washers, and beads for a unique touch.
### What You’ll Need:
– Rope
– Embroidery floss
– Small beads
– Lobster clasp
– Large lock nuts
– Chain
### How to Make It:
1. Cut the rope slightly longer than your desired necklace length. Wrap masking tape around the ends to prevent fraying.
2. Tie the first color of embroidery floss at one end with a double knot.
3. Start wrapping the floss around the rope, leaving the starting end loose.
4. To switch colors, double knot the new floss with the previous one.
5. Keep wrapping, covering up any loose ends as you go.
6. Continue switching colors to create your desired pattern.
7. Wrap until the entire rope is covered, then trim the floss, leaving a small section of masking tape at the end.
8. Thread the floss through a lock nut and screw the nut onto the rope’s end.
9. Attach the chain to both ends of the rope and secure it with a lobster clasp.
And that’s it—your first necklace is ready! You can make multiple strands to layer together for a bolder look. Want to add more flair? Try threading washers onto the rope or adding beads to the embroidery floss while wrapping. Get creative and have fun designing your own unique combinations!
