The ‘Culture Care’ Booth at Essence Fest Showcased Telemedicine’s Role in Supporting Black Women’s Health & Wellness

The way we access healthcare is changing, and digital platforms like Culture Care are making it easier for Black women to connect with Black doctors through telemedicine.

At Essence Fest, the Culture Care booth highlighted the significant disparities in the U.S. healthcare system, particularly for women of color. Claire Sulmers, CEO of Fashion Bomb, shared her personal experiences with inadequate healthcare and emphasized the importance of equal access to quality medical services. She stressed that proper healthcare should not be a privilege and praised Culture Care for providing Black women with affordable consultations from doctors who understand their unique needs.

Dr. Joy A. Cooper, known as the “Olivia Pope of ObGyn,” spoke about the alarming maternal health crisis in the Black community, which is often linked to discrimination in the medical field. Black women face higher risks during pregnancy and are more likely to suffer from conditions like asthma and heart disease. These statistics highlight the urgent need for Black women to have access to doctors who can offer culturally competent, high-quality care.

Health concerns such as obesity also disproportionately affect Black women, with 79% classified as overweight or obese. This increases the risk of serious conditions like heart disease, hypertension, liver disease, and diabetes. Acknowledging these risks is the first step toward better health, followed by adopting healthier eating habits and regular exercise.

Culture Care provides a virtual space where Black women can receive honest, supportive medical advice to help them take control of their health. Whether seeking care for fertility, fibroids, therapy, or postpartum recovery, doctors like Aaliyah Hodge, Stephanie Brown, and Joy A. Cooper are available for consultations from the comfort of home.

With healthcare now more accessible than ever, there’s no reason to delay seeking medical attention. Even those without insurance can receive care at the same affordable rate. Prioritizing health is one of the greatest forms of self-care, and now is the perfect time to take action.

Appointments are available in California, New York, and Pennsylvania, with a special 30% discount this summer using the code CLAIRE30 in celebration of Essence Fest’s 30th anniversary. Those interested in bringing Culture Care to their state can join the VIP list by texting VIP to 33777.
