Misa Hylton Honored with HOMAGE Award in New York for Her Impact on Fashion, Media, and Hip-Hop

Misa Hylton, a trailblazer in the fashion industry for over 32 years, was honored with a HOMAGE Award by Bevy Smith on Thursday evening at the Everdene rooftop in New York City.

HOMAGE, founded by Peter Paul, Nilson Martinez, Deneen Scott, and Soni WithanEYE, is a platform dedicated to recognizing industry professionals who have made a lasting impact on the culture. This year’s event was particularly significant as it coincided with Hip-Hop’s 50th anniversary. Since Misa Hylton emerged on the scene 18 years after Hip-Hop’s inception, her influence on fashion, media, and culture made her the perfect honoree for the occasion.

As a global fashion designer, Hylton has been the creative force behind some of the most iconic looks in music videos and on red carpets. She began her career at just 17 while dating rapper Diddy, who was then an A&R at Uptown Records. Her early work styling artists like Jodeci and Mary J. Blige caught the attention of music executives like Andre Harrell and Russell Simmons, setting the stage for a groundbreaking career.

Misa Hylton has played a crucial role in shaping hip-hop fashion, seamlessly bridging the gap between streetwear and luxury. From Lil’ Kim’s unforgettable purple pastie jumpsuit at the 1999 MTV Awards to Beyoncé’s bold MCM logo ensemble in the “APESHIT” video, Hylton has built a legacy by pushing boundaries and redefining fashion.

As she took the stage to accept her award, Hylton radiated joy. She embodied hip-hop’s signature style in a black Helmut Lang sports bra layered with a cropped white shirt, paired with black double-waistband shorts. Gold jewelry, including diamond-shaped earrings and a heart-shaped diamond-encrusted necklace, completed her sporty-chic look, perfectly suited for the occasion.

Reflecting on her journey, Hylton highlighted one of her proudest achievements—founding the Misa Hylton Fashion Academy in 2012. Her mission has been to give back through education and mentorship, empowering people of color to break into the fashion industry and rise to positions of influence.

Following her award acceptance, her youngest son, Niko Brim, delivered a heartfelt poem to his mother, followed by a live performance that captivated the audience.

Rapper Rapsody summed up the evening’s sentiment, emphasizing the importance of celebrating a true pioneer in the fashion industry. Misa Hylton’s contributions to fashion and hip-hop are undeniable, and her influence continues to inspire generations.
